The Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WRFA) Weekend is offered as a combined training opportunity for CPR/AED and WRFA, meeting Boy Scouts of America (BSA) requirements for high-adventure activities. WRFA is a 16-hour, nationally recognized course designed to prepare adult leaders for medical emergencies in remote and backcountry environments where professional medical care may be delayed. WRFA certification is required for participation at BSA National High Adventure Bases, including Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base, Northern Tier, and Bechtel Summit, as well as many council high-adventure camps and treks.
Because WRFA requires a current CPR/AED certification, the courses are scheduled together to allow participants to complete all requirements in one weekend. CPR/AED training is held Friday evening, followed by WRFA instruction on Saturday and Sunday to meet the full 16-hour requirement. Participants who already hold a current, valid CPR/AED certification may opt out of the Friday CPR session; a copy of the CPR card must be provided prior to the start of the WRFA course.
This course is designed primarily for adult Scout leaders, as WRFA is often required for adults supervising high-adventure activities. Youth participants may attend only if they are at least 14 years old and have achieved the rank of Life Scout, and only if space is available after adult registrations are filled. Because adult leaders are required for unit participation, adult registrations take priority, and youth participants may be moved to a waitlist if additional adults need to be accommodated. Parents or youth must contact the Course Director in advance to request approval for youth attendance. Full participation policies are available at www.CJS-ARC.com/policies.
